St. Pius X gets rematch with Upson-Lee

St. Pius X will have an opportunity to get redemption in the Class AAAA championship game.

 

The No. 2-ranked Golden Lions (28-3) will face No. 1 ranked Upson-Lee (30-0) March 10 at Georgia Tech’s McCamish Pavilion. The game will be a rematch of last year’s championship game, which Upson-Lee won 53-48.

 

St. Pius advanced to the championship game with a 66-61 win over Baldwin March 2 at Fort Valley State University. The Golden Lions jumped out to a 16-8 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Baldwin outscored St. Pius 34-26 over the next two quarters to tie the game 42 all.

 

St. Pius was down 58-57 with under six minutes left in the game until Everett Lane hit a three-pointer to give the Golden Lions a 60-58 lead. A basket by Troy Stephens extended the lead to 62-58, then Baldwin brought the score back within two-points.

 

St. Pius would hit four free throws to close out the game.

The Golden Lions will tip off against Upson-Lee at 4 p.m.
