Free Stonecrest summer activities to address youth violence
A five-week event and concert series to educate families about safety while discouraging violence is coming to Stonecrest.
Community leaders announced that registration has opened for the Summer of Peace Youth Program and Summer Concert series, a five-week initiative that begins on July 5 and occurs every Friday through Aug. 2 at The Mall at Stonecrest.
A news release states that the series of events are a “community-driven effort aimed at promoting peace and safety in our community while providing a fun and engaging environment for youth and their families.”
The plan for the events includes multiple activities and workshops that draw attention to the potential causes and solutions to youth violence. It will also include a free outdoor concert series with live music performances, food vendors, and activities.
Activities include violence prevention training, multi-media painting workshops, self-defense classes, podcasting, and radio broadcasting, according to a press release.
DeKalb CEO Elect Lorraine Cochran-Johnson joined leaders from Stonecrest, 100 Black Men of DeKalb County, and Privi—which will provide space for the events at 8020 Mall Parkway, Lot C—to announce the events on June 28.
The five-week plan also includes weekly Family Reunion Fridays, which will include a free outdoor summer concert held at Privi in Parking Lot C.
The activities will be held on Fridays from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. Registration is required at https://www.privistonecrest.com/event-details/summer-of-peace-youth-program. Program organizers said space is limited and encouraged interested families to sign up for free.
